At Garrett’s, the Pie Case Tells You What Day It Is

People around Fairview Avenue will tell you: if you want to know what day of the week it is, look at the pie case at Garrett’s. Wednesday means sweet potato. Friday means coconut cream. It’s been that way for years, and nobody’s asked them to change it.

Garrett’s Restaurant sits on the edge of the Cloverdale neighborhood, the kind of place that has been there long enough that regulars stop explaining how to find it. You just go. The building is not remarkable from the outside — a low-slung structure with a parking lot that fills up faster than it should for a Tuesday lunch — but once you’re inside, the place has a steady, unhurried energy that’s hard to manufacture.

The menu is Southern meat-and-three, done without irony or nostalgia-branding. You pick your protein off the board — fried chicken, smothered pork chop, chicken and dumplings on certain days — and then you walk down the line and choose your sides. The staff behind the counter will not rush you, but they also won’t pretend the crowded line behind you doesn’t exist. It’s a reasonable transaction, and everyone seems to understand the terms.

The sides are where Garrett’s earns its reputation. The butter beans are cooked down properly, not just warmed. The turnip greens have that low-simmered depth that takes real time. Macaroni and cheese comes out in a casserole style, baked rather than sauced, with a crust on top that people will quietly try to maneuver toward. Order three sides; you’ll want four. Cornbread arrives on the tray without you asking for it.

Lunch is the right meal to come for. Dinner service is shorter and the selection thins out by late afternoon. If you show up at 11:30 on a weekday, you beat the crowd; by noon, the place is at capacity and the fried chicken is going fast. Parking can get tight, so give yourself a few minutes.

Pricing is what you’d expect from a place like this — $10 to $14 covers a meat and two or three sides, plus the cornbread, plus whatever you get from that pie case. The pie slice will cost you about two dollars more, and it is worth it in a way that feels almost unfair given everything else you’ve already spent. The sweet potato version — if you catch a Wednesday — is dense and spiced without being fussy, the kind of thing someone’s grandmother would claim credit for at a church supper.

What makes Garrett’s hold up over time isn’t a single dish or a charismatic owner story or a renovation that made it photogenic. It’s consistency. The food tastes the same on a Thursday in February as it does on a Friday in October. The staff treats regulars and first-timers with the same level of competent indifference, which sounds like a slight but isn’t — it means you’re not performing your visit, you’re just eating lunch.

Montgomery has plenty of restaurants chasing something: a vibe, a press mention, a moment. Garrett’s is not chasing anything. It’s just open, it’s serving food, and it’s been doing both long enough that the pie case has its own schedule. That’s not nothing.
