Dinner at Wintzell’s Uptown Sibling Gets Overlooked

What do you do when you want a real sit-down seafood dinner in Mobile but every table at the obvious spots is taken? That was me on a Thursday in late April, standing on the sidewalk near the Midtown stretch of Old Shell Road, when a friend said, “Just try Constantine’s.” I had driven past the place a dozen times and never gone in. That was a mistake I won’t repeat.

Constantine’s sits in a low-slung brick building that doesn’t advertise itself much from the outside. The sign is modest. The parking lot is small. Walk in around six and you’ll find the dining room already filling up — mostly regulars, a few couples celebrating something, one or two solo diners at the bar nursing a glass of Chardonnay. The light is warm without being romantic-restaurant dim, the booths are comfortable, and the whole place smells like somebody’s been making a roux since noon.

The menu is longer than you’d expect. Gulf seafood anchors everything, but Constantine’s also does chicken, steaks, and pasta in a way that feels Italian-Southern rather than either one exclusively. I ordered the crabmeat au gratin to start — it comes out in a small cast-iron skillet, bubbling at the edges, with lump crab folded into a cream sauce that has just enough sharpness to keep it from going heavy. I ate most of it before my bread was gone.

For the main, I went with the broiled Gulf flounder. This is the kind of dish that exposes a kitchen: simple prep, fresh fish, nothing to hide behind. The flounder arrived butterflied, lightly seasoned, with a thin smear of herb butter melting across the top. It didn’t need anything else. I ordered the red beans and rice as a side mostly out of habit, and they were better than average — the sausage had real smoke to it, the beans weren’t mushy.

Prices land somewhere in the mid-range for Mobile seafood: appetizers run $10–$14, entrees mostly $18–$28. For the quality and the portion size, it felt fair. The wine list is short but reasonable. I had a glass of a dry Riesling that worked well with the flounder.

Service was the kind that checks on you without hovering. My water glass got refilled twice before I noticed it was low. The server knew the menu well enough to give me an actual opinion when I asked about the stuffed crab — she said it was good but the au gratin was better. She was right.

The dessert menu has bread pudding with whiskey sauce, and I will not pretend I resisted it. The portions are generous; share it if you’re already full from the main, but don’t skip it entirely.

Constantine’s doesn’t get mentioned in the same breath as some of Mobile’s bigger seafood names, and I’m not entirely sure why. It’s been around long enough to know what it’s doing. The fish is sourced locally, the cooking is consistent, and the room has an ease to it — no pretension, no noise, just dinner done well. Go on a weeknight if you can. Weekend reservations fill up faster than the place lets on.
