Astros rally past Phillies 6-5 on three homers

Houston’s trio of power hitters delivered a decisive night for the Astros on Tuesday, combining for three home runs to secure a 6-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Key offensive highlights

Christian Walker opened the scoring with a three‑run blast in the second inning off Phillies starter Andrew Painter. The shot marked Walker’s 25th of the season, his sixth straight 25‑home‑run campaign and his fifth consecutive season reaching that mark.

Cam Smith added his 18th homer of the year in the fourth inning, while Daulton Varsho contributed an 11th‑season home run in the seventh. Both were solo shots that helped extend the Astros’ early lead.

Pitching performance

Veteran right‑hander Hayden Wesneski (5-1) earned the win, delivering six solid innings while allowing five hits and three runs. He kept the Phillies off the scoreboard until the sixth inning, preserving a streak of 12 straight scoreless innings for Houston.

Philadelphia’s rookie starter Andrew Painter, who entered the game with a 3.12 ERA over his last 40.1 innings, struggled, surrendering ten hits and five earned runs over five innings. The 23‑year‑old had been a bright spot since his recall from Triple‑A in late July.

Late‑game drama

The Phillies narrowed the gap in the sixth when Justin Crawford doubled, Kyle Schwarber singled him home and Trea Turner launched his 18th homer of the season, cutting the lead to 5‑3. Brandon Marsh added an RBI double in the seventh.

In the ninth, Bryson Stott led off with a single and scored on Edmundo Sosa’s double, putting the Astros ahead 6‑5. Closer Josh Hader, who had not allowed a run since July 20, recorded his 24th save in as many opportunities by retiring the final three batters, including a strikeout of Schwarber to end the game.

Notable absences

Yordan Álvarez, who leads the American League in batting average and is tied for the league lead in home runs and RBIs, went 0‑for‑5. Long‑time Astro Jose Altuve, nearing the 2,500‑hit milestone with 2,499 career hits, also finished 0‑for‑5.

Looking ahead

The Astros head into their next series with a two‑game lead atop the AL West. Houston’s Hunter Brown (5-3, 3.31 ERA) will start Wednesday against Phillies right‑hander Cristopher Sanchez (16-5, 2.58 ERA). Both clubs remain in the hunt for postseason positioning as the regular season enters its final stretch.
