A former hospital in Los Angeles has been transformed into an immersive art experience, exploring different facets of being human. The “Hospital of Emotions” features 80 installations by 70 artists, each receiving around $14,000 to transform the clinical space into explorations of feelings around medical and family trauma, grief over climate change, and immigration detention centers.
Exploring Emotions
The project was created in the spirit of Meow Wolf and other for-profit amusement centers that approach art as entertainment. Color-coded creatures personify a range of emotions, from joy and hope to anger and sadness. Visitors can enter the “Resilience Department” and experience an unsettling interactive audio piece about an artist’s experience having an epileptic seizure.
Other installations include a room filled with sunny-side up eggs, representing the artist’s childhood experience of being forced to eat eggs despite hating them. Another room features a virtual character giving a vulnerable speech about post-traumatic stress from serving in a combat zone.
Tickets for the exhibit cost $58 and are available through September 30, 2026.
