British artist Gareth Fuller creates large-scale pen and ink drawings of cities, including Washington, DC. These drawings, which he calls ‘mind maps,’ are his artistic representations of time spent walking around and exploring cities.

Fuller’s Process

Fuller spends months or even years exploring cities on foot, taking in the sights, sounds, and experiences of each place. He then uses these experiences to create his intricate drawings, which include a wide range of details, from landmarks and street patterns to personal anecdotes and cultural references.

For example, his map of Washington, DC, includes a small Star of David, the number 51 (a reference to the movement to make DC the 51st state), and a pattern inspired by the ceilings of the DC metro system. The map also includes a tiny US Capitol building, minus its dome, and a series of music notes.

Exhibition

Fuller’s work will soon be on display at Stony Brook University in upstate New York, as part of an exhibit called ‘Walking the World: Gareth Fuller’s Art of Place.’ The exhibit will run from September 9 to December 18 at the college’s Skylight Gallery.
