Arlington’s Best Afternoon Involves a Kayak and No Cell Signal

Tucked into a quiet corner of southwest Arlington, Airfield Falls Conservation Park is the kind of place that makes you forget you’re a ten-minute drive from a stadium that seats 80,000 people. Named for the historic airfield that once occupied this land during World War II, the park sits on roughly 167 acres of creek-fed woodland — and it holds Arlington’s only natural waterfall. That detail alone should be enough to get you in the car.

The trailhead sits off West Sublett Road, and from the moment you step onto the packed gravel path, the city noise starts to dissolve. The main loop runs a little over two miles and takes most people somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour and a half depending on how many times you stop to photograph the creek. And you will stop. Village Creek winds alongside much of the trail, its shallow, rock-strewn bed catching the light in a way that seems almost theatrical in the late afternoon. Cottonwoods and cedar elms arch overhead, and during the spring wildflower season the understory fills in with color that feels completely at odds with the suburban landscape just beyond the tree line.

The waterfall itself — modest by mountain standards, but genuinely lovely for North Texas — sits about halfway through the loop. There’s a small overlook area where you can sit on the rocky ledge and listen to the water move. Families tend to linger here with kids who want to scramble down to the creek bed, and honestly, that impulse is correct. Get your feet wet. The water is clean and the mood is entirely forgiving.

What makes Airfield Falls feel special beyond its scenery is the thoughtfulness of how it’s been preserved. The park is managed in partnership with the Army Corps of Engineers and the city, and it shows — the trail surface is maintained, there’s real signage explaining the site’s military history, and the area around the waterfall has been left deliberately natural rather than manicured into something that feels like a theme park. You get the sense that someone actually cared about getting this right.

Dogs are welcome on leash, the trail is free to access, and parking along the road is manageable even on weekends if you arrive before 10 a.m. Bring water, real walking shoes if the ground is damp, and maybe a sandwich. The creek-side rocks make a perfectly reasonable lunch spot. There are no food vendors, no admission booth, and no arcade sounds echoing from somewhere nearby. That’s the whole point.

Arlington markets itself — correctly — as an entertainment destination. But Airfield Falls is what the city looks like when it exhales. It’s a trail worth driving across town for, and once you’ve been, you’ll find yourself going back more often than you planned.
