Stargazers across the ArkLaTex have a reason to look up as multiple celestial events unfold across the sky. The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, with ideal viewing conditions due to a new moon phase.
Celestial Events
Before sunrise Wednesday morning, early risers can also catch a planetary parade featuring six planets spread across the eastern sky. Mars and Saturn will be visible to the naked eye, while Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, and Neptune will appear closer to the horizon or require binoculars or a telescope to see clearly.
A total solar eclipse is also occurring Wednesday, although it will not be visible from the ArkLaTex or the southern United States. Astronomers recommend finding a location away from city lights and giving your eyes at least 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness for the best meteor viewing.
