A voluntary fishing closure has been issued on a portion of the Arkansas River tailwater in Pueblo, Colorado, to help protect trout from hot temperatures. The closure, which is in effect daily from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m., affects the area from Pueblo Boulevard East to where the river meets Fountain Creek.
According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), low flows and rising water temperatures are causing issues for trout in the river. To help mitigate the problem, CPW is releasing cold water from Pueblo Reservoir to help keep the upper tailwater cool enough for the trout.
Anglers are advised to try to fish earlier in the day when temperatures are cooler and to handle fish gently when removing hooks and releasing them. More information on river conditions and current fishing restrictions is available on the CPW website.
