Arkansas Launches Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign for Labor Day

Starting Friday and running through Sept. 7, Arkansas law‑enforcement agencies at the state and local level are partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the nationwide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The effort targets the Labor Day holiday, which consistently ranks among the deadliest times of year for alcohol‑related crashes.

Why Labor Day Matters

According to a recent Arkansas State Police news release, the 2024 Labor Day holiday period saw 505 traffic‑related fatalities across the United States, with 170 of those deaths involving a drunken driver. Among drivers aged 18 to 34 who died in crashes during that period, 40 % had blood‑alcohol concentrations of .08 or higher, the legal threshold for intoxication.

State Officials Emphasize Planning

Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Mike Hagar, who also serves as colonel of the state police, stressed that keeping Arkansas roads safe is the highest priority for his agency. “If your Labor Day plans include alcohol, make your transportation plans before you take your first drink. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or call someone you trust,” Hagar said.

The campaign will see increased traffic stops, sobriety checkpoints, and public‑service announcements throughout the state. Officers will be looking for drivers who appear impaired, have open containers, or exhibit erratic driving behavior. Those who refuse a breath test or are found to be over the .08 limit will face the same penalties as any other impaired‑driving violation.

How Residents Can Stay Safe

In addition to law‑enforcement actions, the NHTSA provides resources for drivers who want to avoid impaired‑driving situations. The agency’s website offers tips on planning safe rides, the importance of designating a sober driver, and the risks associated with drinking and driving. Arkansas residents can also call the Arkansas Highway Safety Office at 501‑618‑8136 for more information.

Community groups, churches, and local businesses are encouraged to spread the word about the campaign, reinforcing the message that a celebration is only as good as the safety measures taken to protect families and neighbors.

Looking Ahead

While the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is a seasonal effort, Arkansas officials say the goal is to establish a lasting culture of responsible driving. By partnering with the NHTSA and leveraging local resources, the state hopes to reduce the number of alcohol‑related crashes not just during Labor Day, but throughout the year.
