Fried Catfish, Cold Beer, and a Porch Swing View of the Coosa: An Afternoon at Catoma Creek Fish House

There is a particular kind of afternoon that belongs only to the Deep South — the kind where the air smells like pine and creek water, the ceiling fans are working hard, and a basket of fried catfish arrives at your table with a side of hush puppies so golden they could pass for treasure. That afternoon, for me, happens most reliably at Catoma Creek Fish House, a beloved locals’ institution tucked along the western edge of Montgomery near the Catoma Creek corridor.

Getting here feels like a small adventure. You follow Montgomery Street out past the busier commercial strips, the cityscape gradually softening into something quieter and more residential, until you find yourself pulling into a gravel lot beside a low, unpretentious building that has clearly seen a lot of good meals come and go. The sign out front is straightforward. The parking lot is packed on weekends. Both of those things are excellent signs.

Walk inside and you are immediately greeted by the sort of honest dining room that no interior decorator has ever touched — and thank goodness for that. Wooden booths, paper napkins, mounted fish on the walls, the low hum of conversation from tables that have been full since before the lunch rush technically started. This is a room built for eating, not for photographing your eating, and there is something deeply refreshing about that.

The menu is exactly what it promises to be: a Southern fish house doing what Southern fish houses do best. The fried catfish is the centerpiece and the crown jewel — fillets with a thin, crunchy cornmeal crust that crackles when you press your fork through it, the fish inside clean and flaky and steaming. Order it as a platter and you will receive more food than any reasonable person needs, which is precisely correct. The coleslaw is cool and vinegar-forward, cutting through the richness in the way only a good coleslaw can. The hush puppies are dense and slightly sweet. The sweet tea is very sweet and very cold.

Beyond catfish, the kitchen turns out solid fried shrimp, oysters when they have them, and a po’ boy that holds up to serious scrutiny. There are combination plates for the indecisive and daily specials written on a board for the adventurous. Whatever you choose, the portions are generous and the prices remain genuinely reasonable — a rare combination that explains the loyalty this place commands among Montgomery regulars.

What makes Catoma Creek Fish House feel special is not any single dish but the accumulated effect of the whole experience. You are eating food made with care, in a room full of people who clearly come back often, in a city that knows a thing or two about the pleasures of a proper Southern table. There is no performance here, no concept, no curated aesthetic. Just good fried fish and a pitcher of tea and the understanding that sometimes the best thing a restaurant can do is get out of its own way.

If you are visiting Montgomery and you have already done the history museums and the monuments and the fine dining, put Catoma Creek Fish House on your list for the meal that feels most like being a local. Go hungry. Bring cash just in case. Order the catfish platter. Leave happy.
