The Arizona Wildcats women’s basketball program met with local media on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the upcoming 2026‑27 season. Coach Becky Burke highlighted “versatility” as the defining theme for the team, noting that players across positions are capable of contributing in multiple ways.
Depth and diverse talent
Burke described the roster as the deepest she has ever coached, estimating a nine‑to‑ten player rotation. “We have enough talent to do it by committee,” she said, adding that many bench players can step in for 20‑minute stretches and still elevate the team’s performance.
The Wildcats feature athletes from five different countries and seven U.S. states, underscoring a cultural breadth that mirrors the on‑court flexibility. Senior forward Priyanka “Pri” Ponnam, originally from an Indian‑American family, spoke about the importance of representation. “I didn’t see many people that looked like me growing up,” Ponnam said, “so I want to be a role model for other Indian Americans and Asians.”
International representation
In addition to Ponnam, the roster includes Sumayah Sugapong, who plays for the Philippines senior national team, and Aliyahna “Puff” Morris, also of Filipino heritage. Their presence adds to what Burke called the “Asian contingent”—larger than most programs nationwide.
Lineup experimentation
Last season, Burke frequently shuffled lineups out of necessity as many players adjusted to Power 4 competition. Consistency was a challenge, but the coaching staff believes the current rotation is solidifying. The first group—Morris, Sugapong, wing Jasleen Green, forward Makayla Presser‑Palmer, and center Gerda Raulušaitytė—has been paired with a second group featuring Ponnam, guard Molly Ladwig, and forward Arynn “Simba” Finley, with Callie Hinder providing additional depth.
Burke emphasized the importance of health heading into the season. Senior guard Breanna Williams, forward Karolina Ułan, and forward Anastasiia Semenova are nursing minor injuries but are expected to be ready for the October start.
Standout players
Center Gerda Raulušaitytė has drawn particular praise. “She’s tough, hard‑nosed, and versatile,” Burke said. “She can shoot the three, post up, and guard multiple positions. I think she could be one of the best players in the Big 12.”
Coach Burke also highlighted the team’s high energy, talent, and coachability, noting that the group “listens and is connected.” She admitted the season will have its ups and downs, but expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to compete at a high level.
Open practice invitation
Fans will have a chance to see the Wildcats in action during an open practice on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. MST. The event, open to season ticket holders, will be followed by a Q&A with Burke and her players. RSVP is required.
