Arizona football wrapped up its preseason camp this week, and head coach Seth Doege used the final practice to solidify the depth chart. The Wildcats will start Heisman candidate quarterback Noah Fifita, with sophomore Sawyer Anderson named the backup quarterback.
Anderson earns backup nod
Anderson did not see game action as a true freshman, but Doege said the quarterback’s work ethic and explosive play during camp set him apart. “He’s had a tremendous camp,” Doege said. “His mobility and ability to throw on the run give him another dimension.” The coach added that Anderson’s development convinced him not to bring in a transfer, trusting the young players already in the program.
Veteran and emerging receivers
Doege also highlighted the depth at receiver, noting that Isaiah Mizell, Caleb Smith and R.J. Mosley have all shown they can be reliable options for Fifita. Mizell, who saw limited action as a freshman, said a year of development helped him become more efficient. “I needed a year to learn the playbook and route tree,” he explained.
Smith is now shouldering more responsibility, including learning punt‑return duties under former pro returner Bobby Wade. “Coach Bob taught me how to read the punter and protect the ball,” Smith said.
Mosley, a 6‑foot‑3 junior, impressed with his ability to secure high‑point passes. Doege compared his current play to Mizell’s last season, noting both have room to grow but are ready to contribute.
Fifita’s attention to detail
Beyond on‑field talent, Doege praised Fifita’s meticulous preparation. The quarterback now uses an iPad to type color‑coordinated notes on film, lifting techniques and even the bands used on his weight‑lifting cards. “He’s extremely organized and rewrites his notes every day,” Doege said, calling Fifita’s mindset a “beginner’s mindset” that keeps him improving.
Looking ahead
The Wildcats open the season against Northern Arizona University on September 5. With a clear depth chart, a solid group of receivers and a quarterback who leaves nothing to chance, Doege expressed confidence the team is ready to compete in the Big 12.
“We have the talent, the preparation and the character to succeed,” Doege concluded.
