Arizona Wildcats Men’s Golf Team Eyes NCAA Championship Success

The Arizona Wildcats men’s golf team is set to compete in the NCAA Championships at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, starting Friday. This year, the team is not just participating but is considered one of the top contenders for the title.

Building on Recent Success

In 2022, the Wildcats were thrilled just to qualify for the championships after a long absence. Fast forward to 2026, and the team has shown remarkable progress. Senior Zach Pollo expressed confidence in the team’s current form, highlighting their strong performance in the Marana Regional, where they shot 49-under par over three rounds, nearly setting a school record.

This impressive showing has elevated Arizona’s national ranking to 12th, a significant improvement from their pre-regional position. The team also secured second place at the Big 12 Championships in April, further solidifying their status as a formidable force in college golf.

Learning from Past Experiences

Reflecting on their 2024 performance, where they fell short on the final day, Pollo and teammate Filip Jakubcik are determined to use past experiences to their advantage. Both players were part of the 2024 squad that narrowly missed advancing to match play, and they are eager to capitalize on the lessons learned.

Jakubcik, who tied with Pollo for the regional title last week, recalls the challenges of playing on a newly renovated course in 2024. He hopes for more favorable conditions this year, which could enhance their chances of success.

Aiming for Historic Achievements

While the ultimate goal is to reach match play, finishing in the top 10 would also be a significant achievement for the program, which last accomplished this in 2004. Under the guidance of legendary coach Rick LaRose, Arizona achieved nine top-10 finishes, including a national title in 1992.

As the Wildcats prepare for the championship, they carry the momentum of recent successes and the determination to make history by advancing to match play for the first time in program history.
