Arizona football coach Lyle Moevao announced Tuesday that the Wildcats will enter the 2026 preseason camp with six capable running backs competing for carries. The depth group includes returning veterans Ismail Mahdi, Kedrick Reescano and Quincy Craig, sophomore prospects Cornelius Warren and Wesley Yarbrough, and newly‑arrived transfer Antwan Roberts.
Mahdi led the 2025 team with 859 rushing yards on an average of just 10.3 carries per game. Reescano and Craig also contributed solid numbers, while Roberts posted 512 yards and four touchdowns at Marshall last season. Mahdi’s return was secured after a federal judge’s ruling allowed him to re‑join the program.
“We’ll keep rotating the backs, evaluating assignments, alignment and fundamentals day to day,” Moevao said. “The competition stays alive until we reach NAU week, and that’s the best way to approach it.”
Depth and versatility
The coaching staff expects to use all six backs throughout the season. Roberts, a 6‑year senior who spent three seasons at Marshall after starting at Wisconsin, impressed coaches with his work ethic and cultural fit during early workouts. “He’s excelled in every department,” Moevao added.
Reescano, entering his third year, emphasized the importance of making the most of each rep. “You can’t take a rep for granted when there aren’t many to go around,” he said.
Both Reescano and Craig have shown ability as receivers, combining for 31 catches and a receiving touchdown each last season. Roberts, at 6‑foot, 201‑pounds, may become a key outlet for quarterback Noah Fifita, especially as defenses focus on the Wildcats’ wide‑receiver corps.
Pass‑blocking and special teams
Reescano posted a pass‑blocking grade of 68.6 last season, surpassing the rating of starting left tackle Ty Buchanan, and could see increased usage in pass‑protection schemes. The depth group also provides flexibility for special‑teams duties and short‑yard situations.
With the added talent and a clear commitment to competition, Arizona hopes to maintain its near‑170 rushing yards per game average from 2025 and improve its standing in the Pac‑12.
