Pelican’s Point and the Pull of Georgetown’s Saltwater Shore

There is a stretch of South Carolina coastline just south of Georgetown where the Atlantic feels genuinely untamed. No high-rises. No souvenir shops crowding the dunes. No soundtrack other than wind, surf, and the occasional laugh of a laughing gull banking overhead. That place is the DeBordieu Colony beach access area, and once you find it, you will understand immediately why people who know it guard it like a family secret.

DeBordieu — locals pronounce it “Debidoo,” and they will smile patiently when you get it wrong — sits tucked between Pawleys Island and North Inlet, flanked by the protected tidal marshes of the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Getting here requires a short drive south on Highway 17 from downtown Georgetown, then a turn toward the coast through a canopy of live oaks draped in Spanish moss so thick the road feels like a green tunnel. That drive alone is worth the trip.

What you find when you arrive is a wide, wild barrier island beach that stretches for miles in both directions with almost no development visible from the waterline. The sand is the color of pale honey. The dunes are tall and vegetated with sea oats that catch the afternoon light. In summer, loggerhead sea turtles nest here — the reserve monitors the nests carefully — and shorebirds work the wrack line in numbers that will make any birder instinctively reach for binoculars.

The beach itself is the draw, but the surrounding preserve adds a layer of richness that elevates this from a nice outing to a genuinely memorable one. The marshes behind the barrier island are part of one of the most intensively studied estuarine systems in North America, and the biodiversity shows. Wood storks, roseate spoonbills, great blue herons, and bottlenose dolphins working the channels are regular sightings. On a clear morning, standing at the water’s edge with the inlet to your south and open ocean ahead, it is easy to feel like you have slipped through a door into an older version of the South Carolina coast.

Come prepared: bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. There are no concession stands, no umbrella rentals, and no crowds to distract you. That is entirely the point. Low tide is the best time to walk south toward the inlet, where the exposed sandbars attract concentrations of shorebirds and the occasional pod of dolphins hunting in the shallows. Early morning visits in late spring and summer offer the coolest temperatures and the most dramatic light on the water.

Georgetown is a town that rewards curiosity, and DeBordieu is perhaps its finest reward for travelers willing to drive just a few more miles than everyone else. Pack a picnic, leave your schedule behind, and let one of the last genuinely wild beaches on the East Coast do what it does best: remind you that not everything worth having requires a reservation.
