Appleton, WI – The city is preparing to add a new Wisconsin historical marker to Houdini Plaza, commemorating the legendary magician and escape artist whose family settled in Appleton in 1878. The dedication is timed to coincide with Oct. 31, the 100th anniversary of Houdini’s death, and will be part of a Halloween‑themed celebration for residents and visitors.
Community effort brings marker to life
“We applied to the state to be able to host a Harry Houdini Wisconsin historical marker right here in Houdini Plaza,” said Jennifer Stephany, Executive Director of Appleton Downtown Inc. Stephany explained that her nonprofit worked closely with the Wisconsin Historical Society to secure approval and design the plaque.
The marker will read, in part, that Houdini was born Ehrich Weiss in Budapest, Hungary, immigrated to the United States at age four, and grew up in a home near the current plaza. It also notes that his father, Mayer Samuel Weiss, served as the first rabbi of Appleton’s Zion Reform Jewish Congregation and that Houdini claimed Appleton as his hometown throughout his career.
Honoring a local legend
Houdini’s connection to Appleton runs deep. In 1897 he and his wife, Bess, performed at the Appleton Opera House, and he famously escaped from handcuffs and a local jail cell, delighting citizens and cementing his reputation as the “Handcuff King.” The new marker will also mention his later achievements as an author, aviator, silent‑film star, inventor, and collector.
“You think about the history and the mark that he made on the art and industry of magic, and it’s really unmatched,” Stephany said. “It’s an honor for the community of Appleton and the Fox Cities to be able to honor that legacy right here in downtown Appleton.”
Celebration plans for Oct. 31
Appleton’s Oct. 31 festivities will include a family‑friendly program at Houdini Plaza, featuring live music, local vendors, and a brief ceremony unveiling the plaque. The event is intended to draw both longtime residents and tourists, highlighting the city’s vibrant downtown and its commitment to preserving local history.
“We’re proud to be able to have this in our community for years and years to come,” Stephany added, emphasizing the lasting impact the marker will have on civic pride and cultural tourism.
Why the marker matters
Historical markers serve as tangible reminders of the people and events that shape a community’s identity. By recognizing Houdini’s early years in Appleton, the city underscores the importance of honoring its diverse heritage, including the contributions of immigrant families and religious leaders who helped build the town.
Local leaders hope the marker will inspire future generations to explore Appleton’s rich past and to appreciate the unique stories that set the Fox Cities apart from other Midwestern locales.
Looking ahead
Appleton Downtown Inc. plans to continue collaborating with the Wisconsin Historical Society on additional projects that celebrate the city’s history and promote economic vitality in the downtown area. The Houdini marker is the latest step in a broader effort to make Appleton a destination for heritage tourism and community pride.
