Appleton nonprofits split $1 million to aid tornado survivors

Appleton, Wis. – In a coordinated effort to help residents still reeling from recent tornado devastation, two local nonprofit organizations will share a $1 million grant aimed at direct relief.

Grant details and partners

United Way Fox Cities President and CEO Lisa Kogan‑Praska confirmed that the Community Response Fund, administered jointly by the Community Foundation of the Fox Cities, the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, and United Way Fox Cities, will allocate the money equally between LEAVEN and People of Progression.

Each organization will receive $500,000 to fund emergency assistance programs, including rent and utility aid, temporary housing support, and essential household items for families whose homes were damaged or destroyed.

Local impact

Both nonprofits have deep roots in the Fox Cities region. LEAVEN focuses on disaster‑relief coordination, while People of Progression provides case‑by‑case financial counseling and direct cash assistance. By splitting the grant, the partners aim to reach a broader segment of the community, ensuring that aid is delivered quickly and efficiently.

“Our goal is to get help to those who need it most, as fast as possible,” Kogan‑Praska said. “By working together, LEAVEN and People of Progression can combine their expertise and networks to restore stability for families still struggling after the tornadoes.”

How residents can access assistance

Households affected by the tornadoes are encouraged to contact either nonprofit directly. LEAVEN’s intake line is 1‑800‑555‑LEAVEN, and People of Progression can be reached at 1‑800‑555‑PROG. Both organizations will verify eligibility and prioritize cases based on urgency and level of need.

Local churches, schools, and civic groups have also offered volunteer support, reinforcing the community‑wide response that underscores Appleton’s tradition of neighborly care and faith‑based service.

Looking ahead

The grant marks a significant infusion of resources for long‑term recovery. While immediate relief is the priority, both nonprofits plan to use part of the funding for rebuilding programs, such as home‑repair workshops and financial‑literacy classes, to help families regain self‑sufficiency.

Community leaders hope the collaborative model will serve as a template for future disaster responses, demonstrating how public‑private partnerships can mobilize quickly to protect families and uphold the values of faith, family, and liberty that define the region.
