Appleton man killed when fishing boat strikes Kewaunee lighthouse break wall

KEWAUNEE, Wisconsin – Early Monday morning, an 81‑year‑old Appleton resident lost his life when the fishing boat he was piloting collided with the south side of the north break wall at the Kewaunee Lighthouse Pier. Police reports indicate the accident occurred just after 4:30 a.m., as the 18‑foot vessel was heading northward out of Kewaunee harbor.

Details of the crash

According to local authorities, the boat was traveling in a northern direction when it struck the concrete break wall that protects the lighthouse pier from lake currents and waves. The impact caused fatal injuries to the driver. The United States Coast Guard recovered the man’s body from the water and pronounced him deceased at the scene.

Passenger condition

A second passenger, a 68‑year‑old man also from Appleton, was on board at the time of the collision. He was taken ashore for evaluation, treated for minor injuries, and released without further medical care.

Investigation underway

The Kewaunee Police Department confirmed that the crash remains under investigation. Officials have not released additional details about the cause of the collision, such as weather conditions, mechanical failure, or possible human error. The investigation will likely involve the Coast Guard, local law‑enforcement, and maritime safety experts.

Safety reminders for local boaters

Lake Michigan’s waters can be treacherous, especially in the early morning hours when visibility is limited. Local authorities routinely advise boaters to check weather forecasts, ensure proper lighting, and maintain a safe speed when navigating near piers and break walls. The Kewaunee Harbor Authority encourages all vessel operators to familiarize themselves with the area’s navigation charts and to report any hazards promptly.

Community response

The tragedy has resonated with the Appleton and Kewaunee communities, where many families rely on fishing and recreational boating as part of their daily lives. Local churches and civic groups have offered prayers and support to the victim’s family, emphasizing the importance of community solidarity during times of loss.

Future steps

While the investigation continues, officials have not indicated any immediate changes to harbor operations or pier infrastructure. Residents are urged to stay informed through updates from the Kewaunee Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard.
