Apogee Partners with Blackstone for $1.3 Billion Eczema Drug Development

Apogee Therapeutics has announced a significant financial partnership with Blackstone Life Sciences, securing up to $1.3 billion to support the late-stage development and potential commercialization of its experimental eczema drug, zumilokibart. This collaboration marks a major milestone for Apogee as it seeks to bring relief to those suffering from moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, a chronic skin condition.

Financial Details and Trial Results

The financing deal includes up to $800 million through a royalty agreement and access to up to $500 million in senior debt. Despite this promising financial backing, Apogee’s shares fell nearly 12% in premarket trading following the announcement of mixed results from a mid-stage trial involving 346 adults. The trial revealed that 65.9% of patients on the mid-dose and 61.6% on the higher dose achieved at least a 75% improvement in eczema severity after 16 weeks, compared to 23.4% on placebo. However, the high dose underperformed the mid-dose, leading to a mixed reception from investors.

Analysts have weighed in on the implications of the results and the financial arrangement. Citi analyst Geoff Meacham noted that the underperformance of the high dose could impact stock performance, while Truist analyst Danielle Brill highlighted that the royalty agreement with Blackstone might deter potential mergers and acquisitions involving Apogee.

Future Prospects

Looking ahead, Apogee plans to advance the mid-dose into late-stage studies in the latter half of 2026. Mizuho analyst Joseph Catanzaro emphasized the potential of the mid-dose data, combined with less frequent maintenance dosing, to position zumilokibart as a best-in-class treatment in terms of efficacy and convenience. If the drug receives FDA approval, Apogee could access an additional $400 million in royalty funding.

Kiran Reddy, senior managing director at Blackstone Life Sciences, remarked on the significance of this deal, stating, “This is the largest royalty financing for a pre-Phase 3 program to date.” This partnership underscores the confidence in zumilokibart’s potential to address a significant unmet need in the treatment of atopic dermatitis.
