A patriotic Fourth of July celebration along South Carolina’s coast has led to the temporary suspension of eight Apache helicopter pilots from flight duties. The decision was made by the S.C. National Guard (SCNG) after reported safety concerns.
Investigation Underway
The SCNG stated that the temporary suspension is a routine, non-punitive safety measure, not a disciplinary action. The pilots remain in good standing with the SCNG and continue to report for daily duty on the ground while the investigation is conducted.
U.S. Congressman Russell Fry has expressed his disagreement with the suspension, stating that the pilots should be celebrated, not sanctioned. The Apache pilots were participating in the ‘Salute to the Shore’ flyover, which is an annual event that takes place along the South Carolina coast.
The helicopters involved in the celebration were from the U.S. Army’s 151st Aviation Regiment, Alpha Company, stationed at McEntire Air Joint National Guard Base in Eastover, S.C. The regiment has served in several military operations, including the Iraq War and the Afghan War.
The ‘Salute from the Shore’ group, which organized the event, has issued a statement praising all who participated in the event, including the Apache pilots. The group’s focus is on bringing South Carolina together in gratitude, patriotism, and appreciation for those who serve.
