Angels’ Jo Adell’s Fielding Blunder Recalls Canseco’s 1993 Mishap

Los Angeles Angels right fielder Jo Adell experienced a fielding mishap on Tuesday night that drew comparisons to a notorious incident from baseball history. During the fourth inning against the Colorado Rockies, Adell attempted to catch a deep flyball hit by TJ Rumfield. The ball, however, grazed the outside of his glove, struck his head, and bounced over the wall for a solo home run.

This unusual play brought back memories of a similar incident involving José Canseco in 1993. Canseco, then with the Texas Rangers, misjudged a long drive by Cleveland’s Carlos Martínez, resulting in the ball bouncing off his head and over the wall for a home run.

Initially, there was some confusion on the field as the ball caromed back into the outfield. Rumfield paused at second base, unsure of the ruling, before completing his run around the bases, contributing to Colorado’s 8-0 lead. The Rockies eventually secured an 8-2 victory.

Adell’s misplay was a stark contrast to his otherwise impressive defensive performances this season. Notably, he had a standout game against the Seattle Mariners, where he robbed them of three potential home runs. His efforts earned praise from former Gold Glove outfielder Torii Hunter, who described it as “probably the greatest defensive game I’ve ever seen.”

Despite some early struggles in his career, including a notable error in 2020, Adell has developed into a reliable fielder. He was even a Gold Glove finalist in 2024, showcasing his growth and skill on the field.

Grayson Rodriguez, the Angels’ starting pitcher, also had a challenging night, allowing three home runs and eight runs in just over three innings.
