As National Ice Cream Day approaches on July 19, Instacart analyzed a year of ice cream orders to determine the most popular flavors and brands in the US. The data shows that vanilla remains the country’s favorite flavor, representing over one-fifth of ice cream purchases.
Top Flavors and Brands
Behind vanilla, chocolate and cookie dough are the next most popular flavors, with cookies and cream, chocolate fudge/brownie, and peanut butter also making the top 10 list. Häagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s are the top two brands, with Breyers holding a comfortable third place.
The data also reveals regional preferences, with the West favoring rocky road, New England and other states preferring coffee, and the South liking butter pecan. Each state has its own unique flavor preferences, with some states favoring mint chocolate chip or good old vanilla.
Regional Creameries
The data also shows that regional creameries are popular, with Tillamook dominating the West, Blue Bell reigning in the South, and Blue Bunny owning the Plains. New England stays faithful to Friendly’s, while Häagen-Dazs stands out in dense coastal markets like New York and New Jersey.
The rising stars in the ice cream world include better-for-you and premium pints like Alec’s Ice Cream, Rebel, Straus Family Creamery, Van Leeuwen, and Graeter’s Ice Cream, which posted some of the strongest growth year over year.
