An American Airlines flight made an emergency landing at Myrtle Beach International Airport on Monday morning after a bird strike. The pilot of American Airlines Flight 1760, a Boeing 737-800, issued a ‘mayday’ call after the incident.
A video taken by a passenger onboard the plane showed flames shooting out of the engine. The pilot reported an ‘engine problem’ and the plane was taken out of service for inspection.
American Airlines stated that there was no indication of a fire in the plane’s engine and no reported injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will investigate the incident.
Bird Strikes a Common Occurrence
The FAA reported that there have been approximately 292,000 reported wildlife strikes with civil aircraft in the U.S. between 1990 and 2023. About 54% of bird strikes occur from July to October, and 62% of bird strikes with civil aircraft occur during the day.
