American Airlines flight experiences blown tires on taxiway at O’Hare

Chicago – Travelers at O’Hare International Airport faced an unexpected delay on Wednesday when an American Airlines jet reported a tire problem while taxiing for departure. Flight 3280, scheduled to fly to Charlotte, North Carolina, pushed back from the gate before the crew discovered that two tires on the main landing gear had blown.

Incident details

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the crew reported the issue at approximately 2:30 p.m. Local air traffic controllers heard the pilots confirm the problem and coordinated the safe deplaning of passengers. Chicago Fire Department personnel responded promptly, and video from the airfield shows firefighters standing by the aircraft as passengers used stairs to exit the plane.

After the passengers were escorted to the terminal, the airline arranged for a bus to transport them to a replacement aircraft. American Airlines issued a statement saying the customers “safely returned to the terminal and will re‑depart shortly on a replacement aircraft.” The airline apologized for the inconvenience and emphasized that safety remained its top priority.

Pattern of tire incidents in Chicago

This was the fifth incident involving blown aircraft tires in the Chicago area during the current month and the fourth at O’Hare alone. Earlier incidents have involved United, American and Southwest airlines, affecting aircraft that were landing, taking off or preparing for departure. None of the events resulted in injuries.

Chicago’s Department of Aviation commissioner told local media last week that the agency is working with the FAA and the airlines to investigate the series of tire failures. At this time, officials have not identified a definitive cause for the recent spate of incidents.

Impact on travelers

Passengers on Flight 3280 experienced a brief disruption but were able to continue their journeys after being re‑booked on another flight to Charlotte. The airline’s quick response and coordination with airport emergency services helped keep the situation under control and prevented any harm to passengers or crew.

Travelers are encouraged to stay informed of any further updates from American Airlines or O’Hare Airport, especially if they have connecting flights or tight schedules. The FAA continues to monitor the situation and will release findings once the investigation is complete.
