American Airlines adds premium seats, restores seatback screens to boost profits

American Airlines disclosed a new strategy to capture more premium revenue as it strives to close a sizable earnings gap with Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. The carrier will reconfigure its narrow‑body aircraft to raise the share of premium seats from roughly 25% today to about 40% in the coming years.

Premium‑seat expansion

CEO Robert Isom said the airline will add additional first‑class cabins and main‑cabin seats with extra legroom as older aircraft are retrofitted and new jets join the fleet. Premium travelers already generate nearly half of American’s ticketed revenue despite representing only about 30% of seats, according to the airline’s second‑quarter data.

Seatback entertainment returns

In a reversal of a decade‑old policy, American will reinstall seatback entertainment screens on its narrow‑body fleet. The airline had previously removed the screens, betting that passengers would use personal devices for media. Recent shifts in passenger preferences, especially among younger travelers, and improvements in high‑speed satellite Wi‑Fi have prompted the change.

The carrier plans to equip more than 800 narrow‑body aircraft with seatback screens. Retrofits are slated to begin in 2028 and should be completed in the early 2030s, while new Airbus and Boeing deliveries equipped with the screens will also start arriving in 2028. American already operates over 140 wide‑body and Airbus A321XLR aircraft with seatback screens, though it did not disclose the cost of the retrofit program.

Financial context

American expects roughly break‑even results for the current year, while Delta and United have projected solid profits. The profit disparity has increased pressure on Isom to demonstrate that the premium‑seat and entertainment upgrades can deliver the needed earnings boost. Earlier this year, flight‑attendant groups called for leadership changes, and the pilots’ union questioned whether management could achieve the targeted improvements.

Isom recently reshuffled senior leadership and acknowledged a “meaningful gap” between American’s performance and where it should be. By focusing on higher‑spending travelers and enhancing the onboard experience, the airline hopes to narrow that gap and improve its competitive standing.

Industry implications

The move reflects a broader industry trend of airlines seeking ancillary revenue from premium products and in‑flight amenities. As high‑speed satellite connectivity becomes more reliable, carriers are re‑evaluating the value of seatback entertainment versus personal device streaming.

American’s plan underscores the importance of catering to passengers willing to pay more for comfort and entertainment, a strategy that could influence other airlines’ seating configurations and service offerings in the years ahead.
