Amazon Web Services holds Shreveport open house to discuss new data center plans

Shreveport, La. – Amazon Web Services (AWS) brought its latest data‑center proposal directly to the community on Tuesday, holding an open house at a local venue so residents could hear details and ask questions. The event was led by AWS Economic Development Vice President Roger Wehner, who emphasized the company’s commitment to transparency and partnership with the city.

Project overview and community concerns

Attendees learned that the proposed data center will be a significant investment for the region, promising new jobs and increased tax revenue. The facility will rely on water‑based cooling systems, a technology that can lower electrical demand during the hottest months. Wehner explained that AWS expects to use water for cooling roughly 13 % of the year, which can reduce the data center’s electrical load by 25 % to 35 % during peak heat periods.

Community members raised questions about the impact on local water supplies and energy costs. In response, Wehner noted that AWS is coordinating with Shreveport’s electric utility, SWEPCO, to ensure that any additional costs are not passed on to existing ratepayers. He added that the company is exploring renewable‑energy options and efficiency measures to keep the project environmentally responsible.

Economic benefits and local partnership

Wehner highlighted that the data center is expected to create a range of employment opportunities, from construction jobs during the build‑out phase to long‑term technical and support positions once the facility is operational. He said AWS aims to become “the best corporate partner” for Shreveport, supporting local businesses and workforce development programs.

The open house also provided a forum for residents to voice concerns about traffic, noise, and land use. AWS representatives assured attendees that they will work closely with city planners and the Shreveport Planning Commission to address zoning and infrastructure needs.

Next steps

Following the community meeting, AWS will submit detailed plans to the city for review. The company expects to begin construction within the next year, pending approval of permits and final agreements with SWEPCO. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through future public meetings and the AWS website, where additional information about the project’s timeline and environmental safeguards will be posted.

By opening a dialogue early, AWS hopes to build trust with Shreveport’s citizens and demonstrate that the data‑center investment can be a catalyst for economic growth while respecting the city’s resources and values.
