U.S. online shoppers spent over $26.4 billion during Amazon’s annual sales event Prime Day, marking a 9.3% year-over-year increase. According to data firm Adobe Analytics, the multibillion-dollar spend was driven by strong discounts on electronics, appliances, and personal care products.
Consumer Spending Trends
Adobe said that many shoppers purchased higher-priced items, including electronics, toys, and appliances, due to the deep discounts offered during the four-day Prime event. This trend may indicate that retailers will need to continue offering significant discounts to drive sales during the holiday season.
Additionally, tax refunds may have provided a financial boost to shoppers, allowing them to make purchases they had been holding off on. According to CFRA Research analyst Arun Sundaram, tax refund amounts increased 11.1% to $3,462 in 2026, giving shoppers more disposable income.
Shoppers also stocked up on kids’ items, apparel, and home goods, signaling that they aimed to purchase products they needed anyway, but at discounted prices. As Sonia Lapinsky, managing director of retail at Alix Partners, noted, this trend points to a fatigued consumer who is trying to spread their limited budget over better deals and discounts.
