Alvin ISD Names New Campuses

Alvin Independent School District has named its new elementary and junior high schools after district leaders who have made significant contributions to the community. The new campuses are part of the district’s 2024 bond program, which includes funding for two new elementary schools, a new junior high school, and a replacement campus for Stevenson Primary and Walt Disney Elementary.

New Campus Names

The approved campus names include Joan Young Junior High School, Emmit Miller Elementary School, Cecelia Jones Elementary School, and Earl Humbird Elementary School. These individuals have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the district and its students.

Joan Young served in the district for 38 years, including as athletic department chair at Alvin High School. She coached tennis and golf, helped develop physical education curriculum, and mentored students and teachers throughout her career. Emmit Miller was a third-generation Alvin resident and educator who taught industrial arts at Alvin High School for 33 years after returning from military service. He also helped design and oversee construction of the school’s woodworking shop.

Cecelia Jones taught music at Mark Twain Elementary from 1975 to 1992 and earned multiple Teacher of the Year honors, including Alvin ISD District Teacher of the Year in 1987. Earl Humbird served 21 years on Alvin ISD’s board of trustees, helping guide the district through growth and the construction of more than 33 facilities.
