Alpha School launches $65K AI‑driven private schools in Lexington, Beacon Hill and Jamaica Plain

Alpha School, a new AI‑driven private school network, is set to open three campuses in Greater Boston this fall – one each in Lexington, Beacon Hill and Jamaica Plain. The tuition is $65,000 per year, and the model promises that students will complete their core academic work in roughly two hours each day.

How the AI model works

Co‑founder MacKenzie Price explains that the school uses personalized learning technology to assess each child’s current knowledge and then tailors lessons to that level and pace. “We are using artificial intelligence to raise human intelligence,” Price said. The system is not a simple chatbot; it continuously evaluates progress and allows children in the same grade to work on vastly different material – for example, a first‑grader might be tackling algebra while a classmate practices basic addition.

Teacher‑guides and curriculum

Alpha calls its educators “guides” and promises a minimum salary of $100,000 a year, describing them as “heroes” who provide both academic instruction and emotional support. About half of the guides come from traditional teaching backgrounds, while the rest are drawn from various industries. The remaining six hours of the school day are devoted to workshops in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, public speaking and other life‑skill subjects.

Parent enthusiasm

Local parent Paul Karger is enrolling his eight‑year‑old son, PJ, after a shadow day in New York left the boy excited about learning. “He came home and said, ‘Daddy, I love learning. I love math. I love reading,’” Karger said. He hopes the reduced core‑class time will free up hours for his son’s other interests.

Critics raise concerns

MIT associate professor Justin Reich cautions that individualized, computer‑based instruction may limit opportunities for students to deliberate and collaborate with peers. “You cannot learn how to deliberate with your neighbors sitting alone in front of a computer,” he said. While acknowledging potential trade‑offs, Reich added that he remains open to learning what works best in education.

Our perspective

We believe that empowering families with a choice that leverages cutting‑edge technology aligns with the values of parental‑rights and school‑choice. The ability to customize education, much like customizing clothing, offers parents a meaningful alternative to traditional private schools. At the same time, we encourage ongoing dialogue about preserving social interaction and community building within any innovative model.

Looking ahead

Alpha School plans to serve about 500 students across kindergarten through eighth grade, with enrollment expected to grow over the coming years. The schools will occupy the former Croft School campus in Jamaica Plain and new facilities in Lexington and Beacon Hill.
