A popular allergy medication was recalled across the country because of potential cross contamination with a heartburn medication that could lead to life-threatening side effects, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Unique Pharmaceutical Laboratories recalled four lots of Cetirizine Hydrochloride, an antihistamine commonly sold over the counter as a generic version of Zyrtec. The medication may be cross contaminated with ranitidine, which is used to treat heartburn and acid indigestion.
If someone with a hypersensitivity to the ingredients in ranitidine were to ingest a contaminated tablet, there is a reasonable probability of serious adverse events, including severe hypersensitivity reactions and anaphylaxis, which are life-threatening.
The recalled tablets were sold in bottles containing 100 5-mg tablets and shipped nationwide by New Jersey-based pharmaceutical company Rising Pharma Holdings Inc. to several retailers and wholesalers.
