Alison Lee’s Historic Comeback Secures Full Point for Team USA in Solheim Cup

Alison Lee, a new mother and former UCLA standout, delivered the most dramatic comeback in Solheim Cup history during the final day of the 2026 competition in the Netherlands. The 31‑year‑old, who began the 2026 LPGA Tour season broadcasting from the booth while on maternity leave, earned a spot on Team USA and quickly proved she belongs among the sport’s elite.

Early success and a historic challenge

Lee contributed to Team USA’s early dominance, winning both of her foursome matches and a four‑ball match in the first two days of the biennial event. On Sunday she entered the singles session as the second American to tee off, but a rough start left her four strokes down after 11 holes against Europe’s Esther Henseleit at Bernardus Golf.

No player in the 36‑year history of the Solheim Cup had ever erased a four‑stroke deficit in a singles match. Undeterred, Lee shifted gears, playing the final seven holes at four‑under. She birdied two of her last three holes, turning a potential tie into a full point for the United States.

First mother to qualify automatically since Juli Inkster

Lee’s achievement is especially notable because she became the first player to automatically qualify for the U.S. Solheim Cup team after giving birth since Hall of Famer Juli Inkster did so in 2011. Returning to competition in mid‑April after maternity leave, Lee had a narrow window to accumulate points, yet she posted three top‑10 finishes in 12 LPGA starts, including a tied‑fifth at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in June.

Team USA’s overall performance

Although Team Europe ultimately won the 2026 Solheim Cup, Lee’s comeback was a bright spot for the Americans on a day when England’s Lottie Woad secured the decisive victory for Europe. Lee’s point contributed to the United States’ strong showing throughout the event, building on the team’s 15.5‑12.5 victory in the 2024 Solheim Cup, where she earned a point while pregnant.

Legacy and inspiration

Lee joins a short list of mothers who have competed at the highest level of women’s golf. The last mother to play in the Solheim Cup before Lee was Norway’s Suzann Pettersen, a captain’s pick for Team Europe in 2019, who retired immediately after helping Europe win.

Lee’s performance underscores the growing presence of women athletes balancing motherhood and elite competition, offering a powerful example for families and faith‑centered communities that value dedication, perseverance, and the support of a strong family unit.
