Algoma Lighthouse Moved for Renovation

The city of Algoma, Wisconsin, is undergoing a significant change to its waterfront. The iconic red lighthouse, a staple of the city since 1932, has been relocated to Sturgeon Bay for a much-needed facelift.

Renovation and Pier Work

According to Algoma City Administrator Matt Murphy, the lighthouse is set to receive a new paint job, which will cost just over $19,000. The renovation is part of a larger project to upgrade the North Pier, a task that will take approximately two years to complete.

Murphy noted that the lighthouse’s temporary absence will likely attract attention from visitors, with many expected to ask about its whereabouts over the next few months. However, the city administrator reassured that the lighthouse will be returned to its original location once the pier renovations are finished.

The relocation of the lighthouse was a spectacle that drew a small crowd, including Tanner Karman, a local police officer. Karman described the experience as ‘pretty cool’ and expressed his admiration for the work that went into moving the lighthouse.

With the lighthouse gone, temporary markers have been put in place to guide boaters. The city is eager to welcome back the iconic landmark, which is an integral part of Algoma’s identity.
