Over the past 16 months, ALDOT has been constructing the additional lanes, resurfacing the roadway, and installing new signage. The $53 million effort also included a mile of resurfacing between I‑459 and the Cahaba River, as well as ongoing resurfacing from Rosedale Drive to Shades Creek Parkway.

Additional improvements that remain in progress include a new, widened Pump House Road bridge, a third left‑turn lane from U.S. 280 West to I‑459 South, a third through lane across I‑459, and the installation of permanent signage. ALDOT expects most of these upgrades to be finished by early October, with the Pump House Road bridge slated to open later this fall.

Impact on local commuters

According to ALDOT, nearly 100,000 vehicles travel between Homewood and I‑459 each day. The added lanes are expected to reduce congestion, shorten travel times, and improve safety for drivers, families, and local businesses that rely on the corridor.
