Albuquerque International Sunport is gearing up for a major increase in travelers during the annual Balloon Fiesta. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will expand its screening operations, adding up to eight lanes—up from the usual four to six—to keep wait times under 30 minutes.
Projected passenger surge
Normally the airport handles 6,000 to 7,000 passengers on an average weekday. During the Balloon Fiesta period, officials expect numbers to rise to as many as 14,000, depending on the day. “Our top ten days of all time are in the Balloon Fiesta period. This is our peak season, not Thanksgiving, not Christmas,” said Richard Rzucidlo, federal security director at the Sunport.
Additional resources
To staff the extra lanes, TSA is extending officer hours and bringing in personnel from other states. “Resources are being deployed from all over the country to assist Albuquerque,” Rzucidlo explained.
Travelers are reminded to follow the 3‑1‑1 liquids rule—3.4‑ounce containers in a one‑quart bag, one bag per passenger—to help keep lines moving smoothly.
Traveler advice
The agency urges passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure, especially during the busiest days between October 4 and October 12, with peak activity expected from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. For those without a REAL ID or passport, TSA offers a $45 expedited verification option through its ID system.
Community excitement
The Balloon Fiesta draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world. Local residents like Lillie Burke, a native of Albuquerque, return each year, calling the event “one of the most magical events ever.” Visitors such as Tony Martinez and his wife describe the fiesta as a bucket‑list experience, traveling from Fresno, California, to witness the larger celebration.
With the added lanes and staff, Sunport officials are confident the airport can handle the influx while keeping wait times short, ensuring a smooth travel experience for both locals and visitors alike.
