Albuquerque Officer Involved in Shooting

An Albuquerque police officer was involved in a shooting on June 2, 2026, after a suspect charged at him with a knife. According to the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), Sgt. Paul Durham fired two rounds from his duty-issued firearm, critically injuring the suspect, Benjamin Siegling, 37.

Incident Details

Sgt. Durham was patrolling the area in Northeast Albuquerque when he spotted Siegling jaywalking. Initially, Siegling identified himself as Matthew Siegling and told Durham he did not have any warrants. However, after being detained, Siegling’s information did not match, and Durham believed he had concealed his identity by using his brother’s name.

Siegling then fled on foot, and Durham chased after him. During the pursuit, Siegling suddenly stopped, turned, and advanced toward Durham with an object in his hand. Durham fired two rounds at Siegling, who was shot in the chest and right arm.

Siegling was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital for treatment and was later booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on June 16, 2026. He was released on Monday, July 20, 2026, with conditions of release.

Siegling faces charges of concealing identity, resisting arrest, and aggravated assault upon a police officer. Detectives determined that he is a convicted felon with two felony warrants for violating conditions of parole and two misdemeanor warrants related to shoplifting and assault on a peace officer.
