Albuquerque Fire Rescue Saves Injured Hiker on Michael Emery Trailhead

On August 21, at approximately 8 a.m., Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) was dispatched to the Michael Emery Trailhead after receiving reports of an injured hiker on the popular local trail. The call prompted a rapid response from the department’s emergency‑medical technicians and rescue personnel.

Rescue operation

AFR crews drove to the trailhead and then proceeded on foot, navigating the rugged terrain to locate the hiker. About halfway up the trail, the team made contact with the individual, who was unable to continue due to an injury. The rescuers performed an on‑site evaluation, stabilizing the hiker and preparing for safe evacuation.

Using a wheeled Stokes basket, the patient was carefully packaged for transport. The basket allowed the crew to move the hiker down the trail while minimizing further strain on the injured area. Once back at the trailhead, Albuquerque Ambulance took over care and transported the patient to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Community impact

The swift response highlights the essential role that local fire and rescue services play in protecting both residents and visitors who enjoy New Mexico’s outdoor recreation areas. While the condition of the hiker was not released, the coordinated effort between AFR and the ambulance service demonstrates the city’s commitment to rapid, professional emergency care.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue regularly conducts training exercises on the city’s extensive trail network to ensure readiness for similar incidents. The department encourages hikers to be prepared, carry basic first‑aid supplies, and stay aware of trail conditions, especially during the early morning hours when visibility can be limited.

Safety reminders

Officials remind the public to:

  • Notify emergency services promptly if an injury occurs.
  • Stay on marked paths and avoid venturing off‑trail without proper equipment.
  • Carry a fully charged cell phone and a basic first‑aid kit.

For more information on trail safety and local emergency resources, residents can visit the Albuquerque Fire Rescue website or contact the department directly.
