A 23-year-old man died after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop and crashing on Interstate 25 in Albuquerque late Thursday night, according to New Mexico State Police.
Police said the incident occurred around 11:40 p.m. on July 17, 2026, when an NMSP officer attempted to stop a 2001 Ford Expedition traveling southbound on I-25. Investigators said the SUV did not stop and instead sped away.
According to state police, the officer turned off emergency equipment because air support was available to follow the vehicle. As the Ford approached the Lomas exit, it rolled over.
The driver, identified as Monty Jimmy Maes, 23, was ejected from the vehicle and taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators said seatbelts do not appear to have been properly used. It is still unknown whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
New Mexico State Police said the crash remains under investigation.
