The University of Alaska Board of Regents has voted to eliminate out-of-state tuition rates for all its universities. In-state and out-of-state students, both undergraduate and graduate, will now pay the exact same tuition rate.

Alaska Unlocked Initiative

The University of Alaska is calling the change “Alaska Unlocked,” intending to draw higher numbers of out-of-state students to Alaska. The new rates will go in effect starting with the 2027-2028 school year. Rates differ between the University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Alaska Fairbanks, and University of Alaska Southeast; but will no longer differ between resident tuition and non-resident tuition.

Most current non-resident tuition rates are approximately 3x the amount paid by resident Alaskan students. The University does not specify on its Cost of Attendance page whether or not the elimination of out-of-state tuition rates will raise tuition for resident Alaskan students while it lowers rates for out-of-state students.

The Board will consider final rates in November 2026.
