Alaska Senate Race Faces Confusion with Two Dan Sullivans

In a surprising turn of events, a new candidate named Dan Sullivan has entered the Alaska Senate race, causing concern among Republican strategists about potential voter confusion. The new candidate, who shares a name with incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, has been linked to Democratic strategist Amber Lee. Lee, known for her progressive consulting work, authored a press release announcing the candidacy of the second Sullivan.

Potential for Voter Confusion

Republican strategists, including National Republican Senate Committee Spokesperson Nick Puglia, have expressed concerns that this move is a political maneuver designed to create confusion among voters. Puglia stated, “Mary Peltola and Chuck Schumer know they can’t beat Senator Sullivan on his record, so they’re resorting to deceitful political maneuvers that attempt to trick Alaskans and buy a seat.”

The new Sullivan’s campaign website leans into the name overlap, urging Alaskans to elect a Sullivan who stands up for Alaska. According to his biography, this Sullivan has a background in blue-collar jobs and decided to run for Senate due to frustration with government inefficiency.

Impact on Alaska’s Open Primary System

Both Sullivans will appear in Alaska’s open primary system, where the top four candidates advance to the general election. The presence of two candidates with the same name could be particularly confusing in Alaska’s ranked choice voting system, which allows voters to select multiple candidates in order of preference. This system, sometimes called “instant runoff voting,” can increase the influence of candidates who may not be a voter’s first choice.

Amber Lee did not respond to requests for comment, but her political leanings and connections to Mary Peltola, Sullivan’s Democratic challenger, suggest that the candidacy of the second Sullivan may not be an earnest attempt to campaign for the Senate.

Alaska has historically leaned Republican, but recent elections have shown shifts, such as the election of Mary Peltola to its lone, at-large district in 2022. The primary election is scheduled for August 18, leaving Republicans with time to clarify the situation to voters.
