Alabama Runoff Elections

Voters in Alabama return to the polls on Tuesday to settle contests for party nominations to several offices that were unsettled in the May 19 primaries because no candidate received a majority of votes.

Local Offices on the Ballot

Nominations to two local offices in Jefferson County are yet to be decided – for assistant tax collector in the Bessemer Division and representative for the Alabama House District 52 seat, both on the Democratic primary. One statewide race, for U.S. Senate, is on the Democratic ballot.

On the Democratic ballot, lawyer Gigi Hayes faces community leader LaTanya Millhouse to determine the Democratic nominee for the Alabama House of Representatives District 52. In the race for the Jefferson County assistant tax collector, based in the Bessemer Division, incumbent Ron Marshall faces Brighton City Clerk Mykeshia Myles Jones.

Statewide Races

Five statewide races are on the Republican ballot for the runoffs, for U.S. Senate, lieutenant governor, attorney general, commissioner of agriculture and industries and Public Service Commission Place 2. The top of the ticket is a hard-fought contest between Jared Hudson, a U.S. Navy SEAL, and U.S. Rep. Barry Moore for the U.S. Senate seat.

Also competitive has been the showdown between Secretary of State Wes Allen and former GOP Chairman John Wahl for lieutenant governor. Deputy Attorney General Katherine Robertson and former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell have been fighting it out for the nomination to the state’s Attorney General’s Office.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday across the region. Residents who voted in one party’s primary on May 19 may vote only in the same party’s runoff. Crossover voting is not allowed in Alabama.
