Starting a family can be one of life’s most exciting milestones, but a new national report suggests Alabama remains one of the most challenging places in the country to welcome a newborn. According to a new study from WalletHub, Alabama ranked 50th overall in its list of the Best and Worst States to Have a Baby in 2026, based on factors including health care, affordability, and family support.
Report Findings
The personal finance website compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia across 31 categories, including delivery costs, access to medical care, infant health outcomes, child care availability, and parental leave policies. Several of Alabama’s rankings contributed to its last-place finish. The state ranked 44th for infant mortality rate, 47th for low birth-weight rates, and 43rd for parental leave policies.
The report comes as families across the country continue to face rising costs associated with childbirth. WalletHub estimates the average conventional birth now costs more than $15,700, while insured families still pay nearly $2,600 out of pocket on average. Researchers say the rankings are designed to highlight where families have access to affordable, high-quality maternal and infant care, as well as the resources needed to support children after birth.
