Alabama proposes Dolly Parton license plate to fund free books for kids

Montgomery, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Revenue has unveiled a proposal for a specialty license plate honoring Dolly Parton and her Imagination Library. The plate, priced at $50, would direct all proceeds to the statewide program that delivers free books to young children in every one of Alabama’s 67 counties.

How the program works

The Imagination Library, founded by Parton, guarantees a new, age‑appropriate book each month to children from birth until they turn five. In Alabama, the initiative already reaches thousands of families, fostering early literacy and a love of reading. The proposed tag would expand that reach by providing a steady stream of funding tied directly to vehicle registrations.

Commitment threshold

To move from concept to production, the state requires at least 1,000 driver commitments by May 1 of next year. As of the latest count, roughly 400 Alabamians have pledged to purchase the tag. The Department of Revenue is encouraging residents to sign up early, emphasizing that each tag not only celebrates Parton’s legacy but also directly benefits local children.

Local impact

Because the proceeds are allocated to the county where the vehicle is registered, the program promises a tangible benefit to every community. Rural counties, which often face limited access to books and educational resources, stand to gain significantly. Parents and community leaders have expressed enthusiasm, noting that the tag offers a simple way for families to support literacy while showing pride in a beloved cultural icon.

How to get the tag

Interested drivers can find more information on the Alabama Department of Revenue’s website, where a sample design of the tag is displayed alongside other specialty plates under consideration. The application process is straightforward: residents enter their vehicle information, pay the $50 fee, and receive the tag in the mail.

Remembering Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton passed away on Tuesday at age 80 in Nashville, Tennessee, after a battle with cancer. Her death prompted tributes worldwide, and the proposed license plate serves as a lasting tribute to her commitment to children’s education. By linking her name to a practical, community‑focused initiative, Alabama aims to keep her spirit of generosity alive for generations to come.

Alabama officials hope the tag will not only raise funds but also inspire other states to consider similar programs that blend cultural recognition with tangible public benefits.
