Tuscaloosa, Ala. – On Wednesday morning, Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack confirmed that sophomore Luke Metz has earned a starting role at inside linebacker for the Crimson Tide, pairing him with Virginia Tech transfer Caleb Woodson. The announcement came during a press pool held on the university’s practice field as the 2026 fall camp entered its final week.
“Luke Metz is really our other starter right now,” Wommack told reporters. “Those other guys have done a really good job; I’m pleased with that room. Chuck Morrell has done a fantastic job with the development in that room. You’re going to see a number of guys out there, but certainly, Luke and Caleb will be the first two out.”
Why Metz Earned the Call
Wommack praised Metz’s growth, emphasizing the linebacker’s anticipation and leadership on the field. “Luke’s anticipation and the confidence in being able to pull the trigger. He just sees the run fits so much better now. He’s got a little bit of a field‑general presence,” the coach said. “When you watch him on game day, the way he communicates, the way he points things out, plays with anticipation – that’s the way you want a linebacker to play. The best production always comes from a defense that can anticipate what is coming next, and he is greatly improved in that regard. I think we’re going to see good production because of that.”
Metz appeared in all 15 games as a true freshman last season, primarily on special teams but also seeing defensive reps. The former four‑star prospect from Mill Creek High School in Georgia recorded seven total tackles in the 2025 campaign. His experience and recent development convinced Wommack that he is ready to step into a full‑time starting role.
Upcoming Schedule
Alabama will return to the practice field on Thursday, Aug. 27, for the 18th practice of the 2026 fall camp. The Crimson Tide open the season at home against East Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 5, with kickoff slated for 11:00 a.m.
Wyatt Fulton, the Tide’s 100.9 DME and brand manager, covered the announcement and noted that fans can follow his coverage on X (formerly Twitter) at @FultonW_ for additional updates throughout the season.
Looking Ahead
With Metz and Woodson anchoring the inside linebacker corps, Alabama’s defense aims to build on the top‑15 rankings achieved during Wommack’s two‑year tenure. The coaching staff expects the unit to rely on anticipation, communication, and disciplined play – hallmarks of the program’s defensive philosophy.
As fall camp concludes, the Crimson Tide will fine‑tune their roster ahead of a schedule that includes non‑conference matchups and SEC rivals. Fans in Tuscaloosa and across Alabama will be watching closely to see how the newly named starters perform when the season begins.
