Alabama Men’s Basketball Adds Director of Player Development and Rehires Coach Oats’ Wife

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The University of Alabama men’s basketball program made two key staffing changes on Thursday morning. After four seasons as the Tide’s director of operations, Josh Pierre was promoted to director of player development. In addition, Alex Accetta, the wife of head coach Nate Oats, rejoined the staff as director of program relations.

Promotions and new responsibilities

Coach Oats praised Pierre’s four‑year tenure, saying, “Over the past four seasons, Josh has been tremendous in his work keeping our program running at the highest level. Competitive college basketball runs in his blood. I expect great things from Josh in his new role. His instincts are strong, and he continues to raise the bar for our players and the program.”

Pierre served as Alabama’s director of basketball operations from 2022 through 2026 and will now focus on player development, overseeing skill training, mentorship and off‑court growth for the roster.

Accetta returns with NBA experience

Executive Deputy Athletic Director and men’s basketball sport administrator Shane Lyons highlighted Accetta’s background, noting, “Alex has an extensive background and proven success in this space at both the collegiate and professional levels. With her previous experience, she has a strong understanding of our program and what it takes to effectively operate at the highest competitive levels. She returns to Alabama basketball after four seasons with the NBA Dallas Mavericks, and we expect her professional franchise experience and insights to continue to advance all we do.”

Before rejoining the Tide, Accetta directed VIP and executive hospitality operations for the Mavericks, managing logistics for team ownership, league executives, corporate partners and high‑profile guests. Although married to Coach Oats in late July, she will report to Lyons rather than directly to the head coach.

Impact on the program

The additions aim to strengthen Alabama’s recruiting, player support and overall program operations as the team prepares for the upcoming season. Both hires reflect a commitment to professional expertise and continuity within the coaching staff.

Wyatt Fulton, the Tide’s 100.9 DME and brand manager, covered the announcement on social media. For more Crimson Tide coverage, follow him on X (formerly Twitter) at @FultonW_.
