Tuscaloosa, Ala. – During Monday morning practice, Alabama freshman safety Jireh Edwards sustained an injury that will require surgery on Monday afternoon, according to the Crimson Tide’s NIL collective, Yea Alabama. The injury, while serious enough to need an operation, is not being classified as season‑ending.
Coach praises Edwards before injury
Edwards, a former five‑star safety recruit from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, had been receiving strong praise from the coaching staff throughout fall camp. Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack described him as “one of the most instinctive playmakers I’ve ever seen coming out of high school. Very physical. He’s got phenomenal tracking of the ball.” Wommack added that Edwards’ blitz IQ and awareness are “really high,” allowing him to create production from his position.
Wommack noted that the coaching staff is still evaluating how much Edwards will see early in the season and in which situations, saying, “Those are the question marks we’ve really challenged him on… can you put everything together that we can throw you out there on any given down? And he’s still working towards that.”
Surgery and next steps
The surgery is scheduled for Monday afternoon, with team medical staff overseeing the procedure. While the exact nature of the injury has not been disclosed, the team’s medical personnel are optimistic that Edwards will return to the field after recovery. Alabama plans to return to the practice field on Tuesday, August 25, for the 16th practice of the 2026 fall camp.
Upcoming schedule
Alabama is slated to open the 2026 season at home against East Carolina on Saturday, September 5, with kickoff set for 11:00 a.m. The Crimson Tide’s preparation continues despite Edwards’ setback, as the coaching staff works to integrate other players into the defensive scheme.
