Alabama Data Centers Spark Debate

Data centers are not a new phenomenon, but recent rapid development has prompted pushback from residents, environmental groups, and politicians in Alabama. The $14.5 billion Project Marvel data center in Bessemer has become a key issue in the mayoral runoff election, with residents raising concerns about transparency and environmental impact.

Data Center Growth

Fueled by the artificial intelligence boom, data center development is taking place at breakneck speed across the country. The U.S. has over 3,000 active facilities and approximately 1,500 more in development. Modern facilities are designed for high-density processing and consume as much electricity as small cities, leading to massive strains on local grids.

Cooling these facilities requires millions of gallons of water daily, putting stress on the environment and municipal water supplies. Environmental watchdogs strongly oppose the developments, citing catastrophic threats to local waterways, endangered species, and community health.

Local Impact

In Brookwood, a Texas-based company has purchased land for a planned $21.5 million data center. A proposed rezoning request is expected to be presented to the Brookwood Planning and Zoning Commission. The debate over data centers has grabbed the attention of Republican and Democratic candidates, with Alabama GOP Gubernatorial nominee Tommy Tuberville strongly supporting development.

Democrat Gubernatorial Nominee Doug Jones responded, stating that local opposition to the projects may not be fueled by Chinese misinformation, but rather by concerns from Alabama families. At least five bills have been filed dealing with data centers, including the Artificial Intelligence Data Center Moratorium Act, backed by West Alabama Democrat Rep. Terri Sewell.
