Akron schools welcome students with high‑fives, hugs and renewed purpose

Across Akron’s neighborhoods, the first day of the 2026‑27 school year unfolded with a warm, personal touch. At Crouse Community Learning Center in Sherbondy Hill, teacher Marsha Bodiford greeted her new fifth‑grade class with a single, clear rule: “We can do anything as long as it does not cause a problem.” The students settled into a quiet morning, completing worksheets while absorbing the calm atmosphere.

Personal greetings set the tone

In University Park, Principal Gregory Blondheim and his staff at Leggett Community Learning Center welcomed returning students by name, commenting on their summer growth and new shoes. Blondheim personally delivered hundreds of high‑fives, chatted with parents and grandparents, and helped direct bus and van drop‑offs. “Our biggest goal here is when they cross over that threshold to make sure that this is the best part of the day,” he said.

Similar scenes played out at David Hill CLC for fifth graders, Hyre CLC for eighth graders, and Garfield CLC for high‑school students. Some families captured the moment in photos or short videos, while others hurried off to reunite with friends, leaving the bleary‑eyed parents at the doors.

Celebrating 180 years of education

Akron Public Schools marked its 180th anniversary this year. Crouse Principal Tara Bruce‑Bently, celebrating her 11th year at the west‑side elementary school, described the atmosphere as “different – I feel excitement in the air…more of a calmness and purpose this year.”

Students share their hopes

At Leggett, nearly 400 students returned for the new school year. Fourth‑grader Tymere Simmons, 9, and his 8‑year‑old brother Tristan, now in third grade, expressed enthusiasm for math, their favorite subject. “Math is the easiest, and reading’s OK,” Tymere said, while Tristan added that both subjects were what he looked forward to learning.

Grandmother Yolanda Ford brought her grandchildren, second‑grader Elijah Asher and kindergartener Neliah, for a first‑day visit. Although Neliah’s classes start on Monday, Ford said she was there for testing. Elijah, shy but hopeful, said he was excited for second grade at the new school, noting that his family had just moved to the neighborhood and that his grandmother might walk them to class once she finishes unpacking.

Veteran educator reflects on decades of service

Blondheim, who began his Akron Public Schools journey as a kindergarten student in 1973, joked that he has “a lot of first days” under his belt, with twenty‑five of those as a principal. He now sees “grand students” – the children of his former pupils – walking through Leggett’s doors, a testament to the district’s lasting community ties.

Leggett’s focus this year includes improving attendance. The school reported a more than 5 percent reduction in chronic absenteeism last year, though Blondheim acknowledged that some families still face challenges. “A lot of our kids understand this is a safe place for them,” he said, underscoring the district’s commitment to a supportive environment.

Looking ahead

As the school year begins, Akron educators and families share a common goal: to provide a safe, nurturing space where children can learn, grow, and thrive. The personal connections forged on this first day set a hopeful tone for the months ahead, reinforcing the district’s long‑standing dedication to its students and community.
