Akron residents may see rent relief if housing proposals make the November ballot. A recent meeting, led by Ward 5 Council Member Johnnie Hannah, discussed initiatives and a new waste transfer station. The meeting, held at the East Akron Neighborhood Development Corp., was attended by 28 community members.
Housing Initiatives
A volunteer from Freedom BLOC introduced housing initiatives that aim to provide rent relief to Akron residents. The initiatives require 5,000 signatures by August to be added to the November ballot.
Additionally, the city has created an agreement with WM (formerly Waste Management) for a new waste and recycling transfer station in East Akron. The $14 million to $16 million project includes the construction of a new facility, closure of the original station, and a $1 million charitable investment.
Community Concerns
Residents expressed concerns about the new facility, citing pest and health issues. Suzie Graham Moore, director of economic development for the City of Akron, addressed these concerns, stating that the new facility will be zoned as commercial and will have stricter EPA requirements. She also encouraged residents to contact 311 with any issues once the new station is opened.
