Akron Children’s Hospital survey shows parents overwhelmed by conflicting health info

Akron, Ohio – A new national caregiver survey conducted by Akron Children’s Hospital highlights growing confusion among parents trying to navigate their children’s health care. The study, which sampled 1,002 caregivers in April, found that 71% of respondents believe there is more conflicting medical information today than ever before.

According to the survey, 27% of caregivers said they have questioned or regretted a health‑care decision for their child, and 20% admitted they delayed a decision because of uncertainty. Additionally, 61% reported confusion about whom to trust for medical advice, while 54% said conflicting information caused them to second‑guess their instincts as parents.

Trust in pediatric professionals remains strong

Despite the information overload, the overwhelming majority of families still place confidence in their pediatricians and primary‑care providers. A full 90% of surveyed caregivers said they trust their doctors, underscoring the critical role pediatricians play in guiding families through the maze of online content, social‑media posts, and AI‑generated advice.

“It feels like a heavy weight that families carry to try and make the right decision when they’re sort of bombarded with all of these uncertainties,” said Dr. Michael Bigham, chief quality officer and pediatric intensivist at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Hospital initiative aims to cut through the noise

In response to these concerns, Akron Children’s launched the “Healthy Info, Healthy Kids” program last year. The initiative provides evidence‑based, science‑backed information through the hospital’s website, a monthly column in the Akron Beacon Journal, social‑media posts, and short physician‑led videos. Dr. Shefali Mahesh, the hospital’s pediatrician‑in‑chief, explained that the program was created because “there’s so much sort of misleading, conflicting health information out there,” and families were struggling to separate fact from fiction.

Mahesh emphasized that while not all conflicting information is false, parents should approach sensational claims—such as promises of a “magical” cure or product‑driven advice—with caution. “Trust but verify,” advised Dr. Bigham, urging families to discuss any online findings with their health‑care provider before acting.

Parents seek guidance, not more data

The survey also revealed that families are not simply absorbing every piece of information they encounter. Instead, they are actively checking and confirming sources. “They’re not looking for us to give them yet another piece of data or another piece of evidence,” said Dr. Mahesh. “They’re looking to us to say, like, how do I make sense of this?”

When parents reach out with concerns, timely responses are essential. Unanswered questions can allow doubt to grow into fear, the physicians noted. By encouraging parents to clearly explain what they have found and ask whether it applies to their child, the hospital hopes to preserve the trust that families place in pediatric professionals.

Looking ahead

Akron Children’s plans to keep the Healthy Info, Healthy Kids program focused on emerging topics and the questions families are hearing. As the volume of conflicting information continues to evolve, the hospital aims to provide factual, up‑to‑date guidance that helps parents make informed decisions for their children’s health.
