Air Force One pilot shares 9/11 rescue story at Sarasota airport breakfast

Sarasota, Fla. – On Friday morning, retired Colonel Mark Tillman, who piloted Air Force One for 18 years, addressed a small audience of teachers, first‑responders and community members at a private breakfast held at Sarasota‑Bradenton International Airport. He recalled the frantic hours of September 11, 2001, when a routine school visit turned into a critical national‑security operation.

President Bush’s school visit turned emergency

President George W. Bush had been at Emma E. Booker Elementary School celebrating student reading‑test scores under the No Child Left Behind Act when news of the terrorist attacks broke. Federal officials immediately ordered the president back to the airport for safety.

Rapid response at the airport

According to Tillman, local firefighters, police officers and airport staff mobilized within minutes. “We had to assume immediately that, okay, maybe we are a target,” he said, describing the heightened alert. Tower controllers cleared Air Force One to climb to any altitude, leaving it as the sole aircraft in the sky while Tillman navigated potential threats and false alarms.

“It was quick. Once we learned what was going on, we started putting the plan together and everything was revolving around the plane sitting on the ramp out here,” Tillman explained.

Cooperation between federal and local teams

The pilot praised the seamless cooperation between the presidential team and Sarasota’s emergency personnel. “The moment we realized what was going on, everybody on this airport came alive,” he said, noting the professionalism of the local infrastructure and logistical support that helped secure the president’s safe departure.

Other missions remembered

Tillman also reflected on other trips he made with President Bush, including a Thanksgiving 2003 flight that took the president into a war zone to dine with troops in Iraq. “We all came together, we supported each other, and I saw it literally from every place I took President Bush,” he recalled.

Looking back, honoring the volunteers

The breakfast also honored Kay Daniels, the teacher whose classroom President Bush was visiting, and the first‑responders who cleared the runway. Their presence underscored the lasting impact of that day on the Sarasota community.

As the 25th anniversary of the attacks approaches, Till’s story serves as a reminder of how local citizens can play a pivotal role in protecting the nation’s leaders during moments of crisis.
